The Beginning of the Carmelite Presence

The history of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Talegaon, is a story of faith, vision, dedication and the generous cooperation of many people. From a small Catholic community, the parish gradually grew into a vibrant faith community through the tireless efforts of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers, the Sisters of St. Ann of Providence (SAP), the Diocese of Poona and the faithful of Talegaon.

In the early years, there were only a few Catholic families in Talegaon. The Catholic families and the Sisters of St. Ann of Providence were spiritually served by priests from St. Jude’s Parish, Dehu Road.

In 2004, with the permission and encouragement of Bishop Valerian D’Souza, Bishop of Poona, the Discalced Carmelite Fathers of the Karnataka-Goa Province began their pastoral presence in Talegaon.

Fr. Lawrence D’Cunha OCD was entrusted with the pioneering work of establishing the Carmelite presence in the area. He worked closely with the Diocese, explored possibilities for a permanent Carmelite foundation and began laying the groundwork for a future parish.

Generosity

The Generosity of the SAP Sisters

Bishop Valerian D’Souza suggested that the Carmelites take up the Talegaon substation, located on Mumbai Road in the campus of the Sisters of St. Ann of Providence.

Fr. Lawrence, together with other Carmelite representatives, met the SAP Sisters. The Sisters warmly welcomed the Carmelite presence and generously offered their cooperation.

The SAP Sisters donated land for a Carmelite residence and prayer house, and for the construction of a church and parish facilities.

This generosity became an important foundation for the future development of the parish.

Pioneering

The Pioneer

Fr. Lawrence D’Cunha OCD played a pioneering role in establishing the Carmelite presence in Talegaon. He worked closely with the Diocese and the local Catholic community, seeking to understand the needs of the faithful and prepare the way for a permanent parish.

During this period, the Catholic community celebrated Mass in the chapel of the SAP Sisters. Fr. Lawrence worked to strengthen the Catholic community and establish the foundations for a parish that would bring together people of different languages, cultures and social backgrounds.

He was also actively involved in diocesan ministry and maintained close contact with Bishop Valerian D’Souza, regularly participating in diocesan meetings and prayer gatherings.

4
Pastoral Leadership

The First Parish Priest

As the Carmelite presence developed, Fr. Joy Francis OCD joined the mission in Talegaon. A young, energetic priest, well acquainted with several languages, he brought new enthusiasm to the pastoral ministry.

Fr. Joy served as chaplain to the SAP Sisters and also ministered to the Catholic community. He energetically worked to create a strong parish spirit, bringing together Catholics of different languages, backgrounds and social groups.

The youth were encouraged to participate actively in the life of the Church, and greater unity developed among the faithful.

Fr. Joy Francis OCD became the first Parish Priest of the emerging Our Lady of Mount Carmel community, continuing and building upon the foundation laid by Fr. Lawrence.

The ministry of Fr. Lawrence and Fr. Joy complemented each other. While Fr. Lawrence pioneered and established the Carmelite presence and worked towards the development of the permanent parish, Fr. Joy gave strong pastoral leadership to the growing Catholic community.

5
Growth

The Growth of the Community

The community gradually grew beyond the small group of Catholic families who had initially gathered at the Sisters' chapel.

The Carmelites worked to bring together Catholics from different linguistic and social backgrounds and to create a community where everyone could feel a sense of belonging.

The youth became increasingly involved, expressing their Christian identity and participating in parish activities. Good relationships were also established with pastors of other Christian denominations in the locality.

The Bishop was pleased with the quality of pastoral service offered by the Carmelites and encouraged the continued development of their presence in Talegaon.

6
Construction

Preparing for a Permanent Church

With the Catholic community growing, the need for a permanent church became increasingly evident.

The SAP Sisters had already generously provided land for the church. The next major task was to complete the necessary legal and administrative formalities and begin construction.

Fr. Lawrence D’Cunha OCD took a leading role in this important phase. He completed the necessary formalities concerning the land and worked tirelessly towards obtaining the required permissions.

He also mobilised financial resources for the construction of the church. A substantial contribution came through the generosity and support of Bishop Valerian D’Souza and the Carmelite Provincials.

7
Development

The Parish Takes Shape

On 28 February 2006, just before Ash Wednesday, Fr. Lawrence came to Talegaon to take up the responsibility of the community. Later Fr. Joy Francis assisted him, and together they worked with dedication and unity.

Fr. Lawrence spearheaded the construction of the church and worked to turn the vision of a permanent parish into reality.

Fr. Lawrence, Fr. Joy and Br. Augustine Robert along with faithful worked together to keep the cost of construction under control. Their personal involvement and efforts helped save considerable expenses.

At the same time, Priests residence was constructed, providing accommodation and space for retreatants, students, aspirants and members of the Carmelite community.

8
Milestone

A Growing Parish Community

The Catholic community of Talegaon has continued to grow steadily over the years. From the humble beginning of just 5–6 Catholic families, the community gradually developed into a growing faith community.

By 2009, the Catholic community had grown considerably. In his recommendation letter dated 16 April 2009, Bishop Valerian D’Souza described the development of the Catholic community in Talegaon. From the original 5–6 Catholic families, the community had grown to approximately 55 Catholic families, numbering around 250 Catholics.

This growth was the fruit of the dedicated pastoral ministry of the Carmelites, the generous cooperation of the SAP Sisters, and the active participation of the faithful.

Today, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Talegaon, has grown to 96 Catholic families, with around 400 parishioners. This growth is a beautiful testimony to the faith, dedication and commitment of generations of parishioners, priests, religious and lay faithful.

What began as a small community gathering in the chapel of the SAP Sisters has now become a vibrant parish family, with children, youth, families and senior members actively participating in the life and mission of the Church.

The journey continues with the same spirit that marked its beginnings—faith in God, devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, unity among the faithful, and a willingness to walk and work together as one parish family.

Living Legacy

A Parish Built on Faith, Sacrifice and Unity

The story of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church is not merely the story of a building. It is the story of faith, sacrifice, generosity and people working together for the glory of God.

From a handful of Catholic families gathering in the chapel of the SAP Sisters, the community has grown into a parish with its own church, pastoral ministries, families, children, youth and many dedicated lay faithful.

The pioneering vision and hard work of Fr. Lawrence D’Cunha OCD, the pastoral leadership of Fr. Joy Francis OCD, the first Parish Priest, the generosity of the Sisters of St. Ann of Providence, the support of the Diocese of Poona, the contribution of Carmelite Fathers and Brothers, and the faith of generations of parishioners have all shaped the parish we have today.

As we look back with gratitude, we remember the words of the Psalmist:

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.” — Psalm 126:3

Under the loving protection of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, our parish continues its journey of faith, seeking to remain a welcoming home where everyone is accepted, valued and loved, and where we walk together and work together as one family.
